Examples
15% of 2,400 is 360. 45 out of 60 is 75%. Going from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase; from 100 to 80 is a 20% decrease. The percentage difference between 80 and 100 is 22.22%.
Formulas
X% of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y. X as a percentage of Y = X ÷ Y × 100. Percentage change = (new − original) ÷ original × 100 — positive is an increase, negative a decrease.
Percentage difference compares two values without either being the “original”: |A − B| ÷ ((A + B) ÷ 2) × 100. Use change when there is a before and after, and difference when comparing two things side by side.
Good to know
- A rise of 50% followed by a fall of 50% does not return to the start: 100 → 150 → 75.
